Brazil’s role in the global critical and strategic minerals agenda

The project was launched in 2024 with the aim of providing an analysis of national demand for minerals essential to the energy transition, as well as the potential supply of these minerals. Its goal is to assess the role Brazil can play in the critical and strategic minerals (CSM) agenda, considering the importance of CSMs for a low-carbon economy and their relevance in today’s geopolitical landscape.

This is an initiative CEBRI, in partnership with the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM), Cenergia (Coppe/UFRJ), the Center for Mineral Technology (CETEM), and the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB). The project also benefits from the collaboration of the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS), sponsorship from BHP and Vale, and institutional support from BMA Advogados.

Through an analysis involving diverse perspectives and stakeholders, this study evaluates the potential impacts of technological pathways for mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Brazil on mineral demand. It maps Brazil’s mineral potential considering domestic and international demand and seeks to understand the implications of this transition for productive sectors and associated supply chains.
