Brazil in the Critical Minerals Agenda:  Strategic Priorities for Competitiveness, Investment and Sustainable Development

As countries seek to strengthen their economic and energy security, accelerate the energy transition and enhance technological competitiveness, critical minerals have become a strategic pillar of industrial policy and international cooperation. In response, governments are advancing policies to strengthen domestic capabilities, attract investment and build resilient, diversified and sustainable critical mineral value chains.

Latin America is uniquely positioned to contribute to this global transformation. Home to abundant mineral resources and significant renewable energy potential, the region has an opportunity to move beyond the role of raw material supplier by fostering value addition, regional integration and sustainable industrial development. In this context, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has been working with governments and partners across the region to advance a regional agenda for critical minerals, supporting policy dialogue, investment frameworks, regional cooperation and the development of competitive value chains.

Brazil is well positioned to play a leading role in this evolving landscape. With abundant mineral resources, a predominantly renewable electricity matrix and strong industrial capabilities, the country has an opportunity to strengthen its position across global critical mineral value chains while promoting innovation, industrial development and sustainable growth. Realizing this potential, however, will require coordinated policies, strategic investments, regulatory certainty, technological development and effective collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Against this backdrop, CEBRI and the IDB have been working together to support Brazil's critical minerals agenda, including through the preparation of a study supporting the country's National Rare Earth Strategy. Building on this collaboration, the event will provide an opportunity to reflect on progress achieved to date, discuss the next steps for Brazil's critical minerals agenda—including rare earths and other strategic minerals—and explore how public policies, financing instruments and international partnerships can strengthen the country's long-term competitiveness.

To advance this dialogue, CEBRI and the IDB will convene senior representatives from government, industry, financial institutions, academia and international organizations for a high-level discussion on Brazil's strategic priorities for critical minerals.
